CHARACTER INFO

Character: Ulpianus
Canon: Arknights, after the events of Stultifera Navis but before Path of Life
Age: unknown, but can be assumed to be 50 at least. His species's average lifespan exceeds 100 years (thought not by super much), and Ulpianus is likely to live longer due to genetic modifications.

Background Information: the wiki gives a good short overview.

Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.

Ulpianus is the head researcher and in many ways the author of the Abyssal Hunter program, which is aimed at creating genetically modified supersoldiers to fight the Seaborn, an ever-evolving species that threatens Ulpianus's home nation. He is also the first Abyssal Hunter, having experimented on himself before allowing other participants.

The first impression he gives is somewhere between "a weirdo" and "threatening". His clothes are both shrouding and flashy (including a Big Hat), he speaks very little and cryptically, tries to stay in the shadows and glares at everything. But if you manage to speak with him in normal circumstances (no danger around and nothing to remind him of the Seaborn), it is noticeable that he is just naturally taciturn and socially awkward instead of actually hostile.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

Protecting his homeland and eliminating the Seaborn. Those are his biggest (and very closely intertwined) goals, and Ulpianus takes devotion to them further than anyone else. He sacrifices himself for them very methodically: by establishing the Hunter program (the idea of this kind of genetic engineering was frowned upon as highly unethical), experimenting on himself, taking responsibility for evaluating all volunteers for the program (and killing them if things go wrong), leading the Hunters' most dangerous assault, then leaving Aegir completely to learn more about the enemy (Aegir isolated itself from other nations and no one else has left it for a long time). His latest canon stunt is deciding to let himself be assimilated by the Seaborn in order to learn more and strike them down from the inside.

Although "eliminate Seaborn" is his more prominent motivation, Ulpianus also cares a lot about his people and the oceans they live in - this is part of his desire to protect his home. He consoles and encourages a young Aegir who is struggling with an identity crisis, roundaboutly wishes for his subordinates to be able to live their normal lives and preserves traces of marine wildlife species that were wiped out by the Seaborn.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

His inability (and sometimes unwillingness) to communicate with people properly, as well as his stubbornness, make things harder on everyone, including his students and subordinates, who are often left in the dark as to his motivations and intentions and whether he is still on their side. In at least two instances other Hunters have to fight Ulpianus despite working towards the same goals, and his student has to (try to) apprehend him because he's acting like the enemy and doesn't explain himself at all.

As for regrets: Ulpianus does not leave himself much, if any, mental space for feelings of regret. The mistakes he himself would name would mostly have to do with making incorrect decisions in the fight against the Seaborn: from miscalculations and misjudgments that meant having to kill his mutating subordinates, to being unable to save Skadi from Ishar'mla's corruption, to not realizing in time that his old friend became a traitor.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

He dresses Like That and he's been wearing his dweeb face mask ever since school years. Also, as a member of an initially aquatic race, he suffers from the land air being too dry, and has to use moisturizing cream and drink a lot of water to stay hydrated.

He also carries a giant anchor around, which is his weapon.

Abilities & Inventory:

Abilities: breathing underwater (biological); swimming quickly despite wearing All Of That (he's from an anime game); extreme physical strength and endurance (supersoldier); being able to handle immense underwater pressure (ppprobably biological); regeneration of wounds (Seaborn DNA).

He also has a perfect sense of direction, perfect pitch, a very good singing voice and is a great composer. But he's unlikely to show those talents off unless somehow necessary to solve a situation.

Nerfables: swimming speed - down to natural skill you'd get from swimming in clothes all your life.
Strength and endurance - down to just Very-Strong-But-Human.
Underwater pressure - it feels like it would be too much of a cheat. If possible, I would like it nerfed down to him being able to handle depths better than most, but not to the point of just being able to walk the Mariana trench seafloor without exploding.
Regeneration of wounds - this is both a beneficial ability and a curse, since it relies on his Seaborn cells, which can potentially overcome Ulpianus completely and turn him into a weird deepsea monster that says stuff like "kin", "nutrients" and "survive". I would like to keep the Seaborn corruption as a kind of hanging sword over him, so if this ability is nerfed completely I would like to work out in what other ways his Seaborn side can manifest.

Items: just his clothes and his dumb huge anchor.

ARMADA SELECTION

I think Ulpianus can fit either armada: overall his motivations are good and for the sake of order and preservation of society and humanity. His actions, however, tend to be far outside the law or social conventions (though rarely outside moral conventions). I would like to leave it up to you!

As for his actions in the game: at the start, at least, he will be focusing on how to leave and go back to his own world. When it becomes clear that it's not possible (or simply ineffective) to do so on his own, he will switch to working on completing whatever objectives may be ICly offered as "endgame" (= a ticket home). He would also be actively researching anything from other worlds or Escordvi itself that may give him some advantage over the Seaborn (science, magic, et cetera).

What I would like to do with him: mostly make him socialize awkwardly, maybe even make A Friend, and generally be a human person for a bit instead of thinking about how to stop the Seaborn 24/7. (Though he will still be thinking about that a lot, of course).
